Zandan Kule Bitola

Zandan Kule  in Bitola is a well-preserved stone tower, located in the schoolyard of the primary school “Stiv Naumov” Bitola.

At first the Tower was in a private property surrounded by a 3 m. wall

The tower was built by Hadzı Mahmud Efendi, also known as Hırka Baba. Hadzı Mahmud Efendi was Müfti of Manastır (Bitola) around 1628 and he built this tower for personal protection.

Later on the upper floor a collection of books and manuscripts was kept, which in 1863 was confiscated by Huseyn Paşa the vali of Monastir (Bitola).

During the Ilinden upraise in 1903, the tower was used as prison and was named ‘Zandan kule’.
