Bezisten – Covered Market
B

Located in the historic center of Bitola, the Bezisten is one of the oldest preserved monuments in the city. Built at the end of the 15th century, this massive stone structure once served as a covered market and played a central role in the economic life of Ottoman Bitola.

Bezisten – Covered Market

Originally, the Bezisten was intended for the trade of valuable goods—fine fabrics, precious textiles, and delicate embroideries. It was a secure place, designed to protect items of high value. In fact, it also served another important function: the belongings of deceased citizens who had no heirs were stored here. Money, jewelry, weapons, manuscripts, and even writing and smoking utensils were kept inside, as these items became property of the state.

The Bezisten was founded by the vizier Kara Daut Pasha Uzunçarşılı. Its solid construction reflects its purpose—thick stone and brick walls, brick arches, and a fortress-like appearance that emphasized safety and control.

In 1667, during the visit of the famous Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi, the market was robbed. After this event, night guards were introduced, and walking through the Bezisten at night without a lantern was strictly forbidden.

Because of its security, the Bezisten was also used to store tax revenues from the Bitola Vilayet before they were transferred to the imperial treasury. These funds were kept in safes in the basement, protected by heavy iron gates and massive walls.

Over the centuries, the building was reconstructed several times. Its present appearance dates mainly from the 20th century, when four neo-baroque entrances and prominent portals were added. Historical records describe the Bezisten as having three internal streets and as many as 84 shops.

In the 20th century, it continued to function as a marketplace—first for textiles, later for food products such as meat, fruit, and vegetables. In the 1980s, the Bezisten was transformed into a modern shopping center, adapting to new times while preserving its historical character.

Today, the Bezisten stands as a powerful reminder of Bitola’s commercial past—a place where trade, security, and urban life once met under one roof, and where history can still be felt in every stone.
