Brief History
The railway station in Bitola is an important part of the city’s transport and historical story. Its history is closely connected with the development of railway transport in Macedonia and with the significant historical events that shaped the region.
The first railway connection to Bitola was built in 1894, on the Bitola – Thessaloniki route. This provided the city with an important transport link to Thessaloniki and the wider region, contributing to the development of trade, travel and economic life.
During the First World War, due to the needs of military transport on the Macedonian Front, a narrow-gauge railway connecting Bitola and Gradsko was built in 1916. During the same period, a narrow-gauge line was also constructed on the route Bakarno Gumno – Borotino – Buchin – Kutretino – Svinishta – Lera, playing an important role in transport during military operations.
After the war, the railway network continued to develop. In 1919, the narrow-gauge railway on the Gradsko – Prilep – Bitola route was opened, providing Bitola with improved railway connections to the central parts of the country.
A significant milestone came in 1931, when Bitola was connected to Prilep by a standard-gauge railway and, through Prilep, further connected to the main railway routes Skopje – Thessaloniki and Skopje – Belgrade. This connection further strengthened Bitola’s importance as a regional commercial, cultural and transport centre.
